Currency Exchange Tips for Uganda
Currency
Uganda’s currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). As of the current exchange rate, 1 US Dollar (USD) is approximately 3800 Ugandan Shillings (UGX).
US Dollars in Uganda
US dollars are widely accepted for lodging, activities, park entrance fees, and safari activities. Please note the following requirements for dollar bills:
- Condition: Dollar bills should be newer than 2003 and free from tears.
- Acceptance: Only clean, undamaged bills are accepted.
Cash Society
Uganda operates largely as a cash society. Many lodges, restaurants, and establishments do not accept credit cards. Therefore, it is essential to carry enough cash to cover your expenses. Here’s what you need to know:
- Payments: Park fees, permits, and many other payments require cash.
- ATMs: There are ATMs available in towns across the country. However, if you are traveling to remote areas, it’s advisable to carry enough cash to cover all your expenses.
Travel Tips for Handling Money

- Local Currency: Convert some money to Ugandan Shillings (UGX) for smaller purchases and tips.
- Carry Cash: Have enough cash on hand, especially when traveling to remote areas where ATMs may not be available.
- Safety: Keep your cash and travel documents secure. Use a money belt or a secure pouch to keep them safe.
- Credit Cards: While not widely accepted, it’s still a good idea to have a credit card for emergencies or in places where it is accepted.
